Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) is a treatment for varicose veins with a minimally invasive procedure. It involves the precise insertion of a very thin laser fibre that has less than one millimetre into the diseased veins. The whole process is carried out by a specialist consultant and it is made under real-time ultrasound guidance.

Following the insertion is made the application of laser energy to heat and close the varicose veins. Over time the treated veins are absorbed by the body and it gets invisible. This is an outpatient procedure, performed under local anaesthetic. After it is finished, patients can go back to their normal activities within a few days.

Endovenous laser therapy is a successful treatment for a variety of vein concerns. Saphenous veins, common in the leg, respond particularly well to endovenous laser therapy, so it is commonly chosen as a treatment. Following endovenous laser therapy, you can return home the same day. However, it is rest is advised for at least three days post-surgery to allow the treated area to fully heal. After treatment, you may notice some slight bruising and tightness, but this should not last much longer than 1-2 weeks.

During your endovenous laser therapy procedure, you will be under local anaesthetic, so no pain or discomfort will be felt during your procedure. After surgery, you may feel some minor tenderness in the treated area and notice some minor bruising.

There are very minimal differences between EVLT and RFA. EVLT tends to be preferred for many surgeons when vein webs or clots are present, or veins have a very large diameter because the catheter used during RFA may not gain sufficient contact with the vein wall.
