Synostosis / Craniofacial Reconstruction
Craniofacial surgery is the discipline dedicated to the treatment of deformities of the face and head. As well as birth defects, facial deformity may arise as a result of trauma or treatment of some craniofacial tumours along. As well as causing a change in appearance, they may cause functional problems and affect sight, speech, breathing and nutrition. Their management is often complicated, requiring the involvement of a multidisciplinary team.
Our multidisciplinary team includes neurosurgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, reconstructive dental surgeons, ENT surgeons, ophthalmologists, speech and language therapists, audiologists, specialist nurses and psychologists that can help manage and plan the treatment required.
Most conditions require detailed assessment before planning and undertaking surgery in order to correct functional problems and improve appearance.
Adult craniofacial reconstruction is undertaken opposite 152 Harley Street at the London Clinic, which is well equipped for undertaking complex facial and craniofacial reconstructions and offers intensive and high dependency care to support postoperative recovery after major reconstructive procedures.
Paediatric craniofacial treatment is undertaken within the craniofacial unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.
