Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery/TMJ Disorder

Treatments are often relatively simple and painless, and can relieve pain whilst improving quality of life

TMJ (the Temporomandibular Joint) is the jaw joint that allows the mouth to open and close. This is a complex area and problems that affect the jaw, such as your upper and lower teeth not meeting together properly, or clenching or teeth grinding, can go on to create further problems associated with temporomandibular disorder.

If you suffer from difficulty in opening your mouth or severe pain when opening, chronic headaches or migraines, or pain in the neck, shoulder, jaw, and ear, we may be able to help.

Following a detailed consultation to discuss your chronic pain, we will work with you to determine the best treatment pathway for pain relief – this may be addressed with muscle relaxants, or more complex mechanical problems may require surgery. At 152 Harley Street, we specialise in treating TMJ with muscle relaxants. Treatments are often relatively simple and painless, and can make a huge difference to relieve pain and improve quality of life.

The procedure involves a small number of injections into the masseter muscles which will reduce the effects of grinding and clenching by relaxing tense muscles, but not so much as to prevent proper use of the jaw muscle for eating.

The procedure takes a few minutes per side to administer and the positive outcome could be felt within 24 hours, although 3-4 days is more common for patients experiencing chronic facial pain due to temporomandibular disorder. The consultant will determine the optimal dose of the muscle relaxant based on the specific requirements of each patient as muscle strength is different for everyone and stronger muscles will need more relaxant.

The effects of the treatment will last for approximately three months and over time, the dose of muscle relaxant for jaw pain can be reduced, or the interval period between treatments can be increased.

A TMJ disorder treatment can remove pain caused from difficulties in opening the mouth, which can create other pain including headaches, neck and facial pain, shoulder and ear pain, in addition to the pain within the jaw muscles.

Muscle relaxant to treat TMJ disorder is typically administered via very fine needles into the muscles that are causing the pain (e.g. masseter muscle) with appropriate dose depending on the strength of the patients’ jaw muscles and TMJ pain.

No pain will be felt during the muscle relaxant being administered as all injections will take place after local anaesthetic has been used.

The TMJ disorder treatment takes approximately 15 minutes to administer.

The price for TMJ disorder treatment depends upon the complexity of the procedure required and the consultant will be able to confirm costs following the first consultation.
