John Harper is Professor of Paediatric Dermatology at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and the Institute of Child Health, University of London. He is a pioneer of paediatric dermatology with a highly respected global reputation. He was the Chairman of the British Society for Paediatric Dermatology from 1988 to1991 and President of the European Society for Paediatric Dermatology from 1993 to 1996.
He trained at St Mary’s Hospital, University of London, qualifying in 1973 and did his postgraduate MD thesis on the skin manifestations of graft versus host disease in children receiving a bone marrow transplant.
His special clinical interests are children with troublesome eczema and birthmarks including haemangiomas and port wine stains. He provides a clinical service for children requiring propranolol treatment for complicated haemangiomas and a skin laser service for port wine stains.
Prof John Harper and Prof David Dunaway offer a combined Paediatric Dermatology and Plastic Surgery clinic, which includes children with complex vascular anomalies.
