Prominent Ear Correction with Earfold™ Surgery
The Earfold™ surgical technique developed in recent years has almost eliminated the need for prominent ear correction using older more invasive techniques such as pinnaplasty/otoplasty. This fast and effective procedure with a short discreet recovery period makes it the obvious option for men, women and children to opt for Earfold™ as their treatment of choice for the correction of prominent ears.
Previous to Earfold™ patients would have no option but to consider a traditional surgical pinnaplasty/otoplasty. This procedure can take up to 2 hours under general anaesthesia with a recovery time of 6 weeks minimum during which the patient needs to wear a full head bandage. Earfold™ is a simple procedure whereby you choose the position of your ears beforehand, you recover within 7 days whilst only wearing a small adhesive dressing or steri-strip. The procedure takes up to 30 mins under local anaesthetic only and involves the surgeon placing a small gold implant into the pinna which is then moulded to the desired look. The patient will immediately see results and go home without the grogginess of having had a general anaesthetic.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE EARFOLD IMPLANT
EarFoldTM is an implant made of a short strip of nitinol. Nitinol is a metal alloy of nickel and titanium and is widely used in medicine. The implant consists of a curved, wafer-thin strip of metal (approximately the same thickness as a human hair) which is plated with 24-carat gold to reduce the visibility of the implant under the skin.
The EarFoldTM implant has undergone extensive laboratory and human clinical testing over a period of several years. You can handle and inspect the EarFoldTM implant when you visit your consultant at 152 Harley Street.
HOW EARFOLD IMPLANTS WORK
EarFold™ implants reshape your ears with a simple procedure lasting just a few minutes. A local anaesthetic injection is used to completely numb the ear. The EarFold™ implants are then introduced under the skin of the ear through a small incision. Once in place, EarFold™ grips the cartilage of the ear and immediately adopts a pre-set shape. This creates or enhances the shape of the anti-helical fold, reducing the prominence of your ear. The incision is then closed. Whilst in place, EarFold™ re-moulds the cartilage of the ear allowing it to maintain its new shape. Since EarFold™ is made of a super-elastic material, your ear can still be moved in a natural way whilst the implant is in place and it will always spring back to its corrected position.
WHY IS EARFOLD DIFFERENT?
The EarFold™ implant can be inserted subcutaneously under the skin of the ear under local anaesthetic. The whole procedure to treat two ears takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Patients will be able to see an immediate change in the prominence of their ears after treatment. Bulky dressings are not required after the treatment has been performed and healing occurs within days.
HOW MUCH CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH EARFOLD?
For the first time in prominent ear correction, earFoldTM provides a unique opportunity for the person to select the precise amount of correction that is desired rather than leaving it to the discretion of the surgeon.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
This will depend on the number of implants needed to correct the ear prominence. However, the whole procedure (making an incision, inserting EarFoldTM and closing the incision) should take no longer than 15 minutes.
HOW QUICK IS RECOVERY?
Most patients return to work immediately after treatment, although they should expect some bruising and swelling after treatment, which is likely to last for a few days.
DOES EARFOLD NEED TO BE REMOVED?
The EarFoldTM implants have been designed to be completely biocompatible and are intended to be left in place permanently. However, if a person wishes to have them removed at any time, this is a quick and easy procedure.
